Foto der Praxisinhaberin und Therapeutin Frau Anett Hörster

On the quiet side of Königsallee in downtown Düsseldorf, our modern and spacious practice rooms are home to a friendly, competent and experienced team. In a pleasant atmosphere, we take plenty of time for your individual treatment and personal care.

Alongside classical Physiotherapy and Manual Therapy, as well as Craniofacial Therapy (head and jaw joint therapy), osteopathy forms the main focus of our services. If required, we also use Physioenergetics (holistic kinesiology) and the VNS analysis (analysis of the autonomic nervous system) for diagnostic purposes.

According to our practice philosophy, we place special value on holistic treatment and interdisciplinary cooperation. On request, we are happy to involve your own physicians, or, if necessary, we draw on our established interdisciplinary network — consisting of various doctors such as dentists, ENT specialists, orthopedists, and neurologists from Düsseldorf and the surrounding area.

Patient Information on Osteopathy

What is Ostopathy?

Dr. Andrew Taylor Still developed osteopathy more than 140 years ago, based on the principle that life is expressed through movement. Wherever movement in the body is restricted, disease can arise. The goal of osteopathic treatment is to restore harmony to the entire organism and activate the body’s self-healing powers.

Blockages and restrictions of movement in the body are detected with the hands and released through a variety of manual techniques. Osteopathy is firmly grounded in the classical medical sciences, in particular:

  • Anatomy (structure and composition of the body)
  • Physiology (function of the body)
  • Embryology (human development)
  • Pathology (study of disease)

Further information can be found in this explanatory video and this short animation provided by the Verband der Osteopathen Deutschland e.V. (VOD).pathen Deutschland e.V. (VOD).

What does a treatment cost?

The treatment fees for services provided by alternative practitioners (this includes, for example, osteopathy, physioenergetics, and VNS analysis) are calculated according to the Gebührenübersicht für Heilpraktiker (Beihilfe rate of the GebüH, as of 2013). Depending on the diagnosis and resulting treatment, the fee is composed of different services and therefore also different cost items. It is therefore not possible to determine the treatment costs as a flat rate in advance; however, we will provide you with comprehensive information during your first visit.

Please note that some private health insurance companies (PKV) / aid offices (Beihilfestellen) may only partially reimburse these services, or not at all. Any resulting difference must be covered by the patient. Please inform yourself in advance with your private health insurance company or aid office. Some statutory health insurance funds (GKV) cover part of the costs. Further information on this can be found in the Osteopathy GKV List of the VOD.

How long does a session last?

An osteopathic treatment usually lasts about 50 minutes. Please note that we operate as an appointment-based practice and reserve the agreed time slot exclusively for you.

If you are unable to keep your appointment, we kindly ask you to cancel at least 24 hours in advance. Otherwise, cancellation fees may apply.

Who may call themselves an osteopath?

Just over two-thirds of people in Germany believe that the profession of “osteopath” is legally regulated — which, unfortunately, is (still) not the case (Source: Forsa Survey 2018). In Germany, unlike in many other countries, “osteopath” is not a recognized training profession. Therefore, anyone may call themselves an osteopath — with the exception of the federal state of Hesse.

In Hesse, osteopathic training is state-regulated. The unauthorized use of the professional title “osteopath” is even punishable there (Source: Ärztezeitung 2015).

Who is allowed to practice osteopathy?

In Germany, osteopathy is considered a form of medical treatment (Heilkunde). By law, it may only be practiced without restriction by medical doctors and licensed alternative practitioners (Heilpraktiker) (Source: Administrative Court Düsseldorf 2008).

We strongly recommend that patients verify this in order to ensure that the osteopathic treatment is provided on a legally valid basis. All of our therapists who practice osteopathy are not only trained physiotherapists but also licensed alternative practitioners (Heilpraktikerinnen).

Which qualifications are recommended?

Ideally, your therapist should not only have completed training in physiotherapy and as an alternative practitioner (Heilpraktiker), but also possess at least four years of osteopathic training. This ensures not only the legal authorization to practice osteopathy (see above), but also the appropriate qualification.

Suitable therapists can be found, for example, on the website of the Verband der Osteopathen Deutschlands e.V. (VOD). Naturally, we are listed there, and all therapists in our practice who provide osteopathy are accordingly qualified. In addition, a further training of usually two years is required in order to practice pediatric osteopathy.

You are welcome to learn more about our qualifications in the practice team section.

Memberships and Trainings

Our practice attaches great importance to sound training and continuous professional development. All osteopathic therapists are alternative practitioners and physical therapists with at least 25 years of professional experience. Through membership in leading professional associations, regular participation in specialized training courses, and the use of modern diagnostic procedures, we combine tradition and innovation in osteopathic work. This ensures that our patients receive care that meets the highest quality standards.

BAO Logo

The  Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft Osteopathie e.V. (BAO): This is the only umbrella organization for osteopathic schools and associations in Germany. In the absence of state-regulated training standards, the BAO has taken on the task of establishing a high-quality minimum standard for osteopathy in Germany. With the BAO seal of quality, the association certifies osteopaths who, after successfully completing their training in accordance with the guidelines, continue to undergo further training in osteopathy and are listed on our website.

Bund Deutscher Heilpraktiker e.V. (BDH): Founded in 1972, it is one of the largest and most influential associations of alternative practitioners in Germany. As a committed professional representative, the BDH advocates for the specific professional, legal, and political interests of alternative practitioners. Membership requires continuous training and quality assurance.

Membership requires continuous training and quality assurance work.

Physioenergetics: The International Academy for Physioenergetics is an internationally recognized
institution for holistic kinesiology. It is based on the arm length reflex method developed by Raphael Van Assche, which is taught specifically to healthcare professionals. The training is characterized by high quality standards and practice-oriented teaching.

Logo der VNS Analyse

Our practice uses the VNS analysis from COMMIT GmbH—an established method for measuring heart rate variability (HRV). The method provides information about the autonomic nervous system and supports an informed assessment of stress levels, regulatory capacity, and state of recovery. It is used both preventively and as an accompaniment to therapy and training. The results serve as a valuable basis for individual recommendations and targeted support in everyday life.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about osteopathy.

In Germany, osteopathic services may only be provided by licensed physicians or alternative practitioners, as they fall under the Alternative Practitioners Act or the practice of medicine.

Your first treatment session typically lasts 45–60 minutes. We begin with a medical history, followed by an examination and appropriate manual techniques. You will often then receive specific exercises for everyday life.

It is generally considered safe when performed by qualified therapists. During our treatment, we are always mindful of potential risks and limitations, and will refer you if another treatment seems more appropriate or necessary.

Prices in Düsseldorf typically range between €100 and €150 for adults (50–60 min.) and €100 to €120 for babies and children (50–60 min.). Please note that specific prices may vary depending on the individual treatment effort.

Private health insurance companies (PKV) typically cover 80–100% of the costs based on the German fee schedule for alternative practitioners (GebüH), provided these services are included in the policy. Statutory health insurance companies (GKV) rarely reimburse – usually only partially and only on the basis of a private prescription, as this is often a prerequisite.

Legally, a doctor's prescription is not required for the treatment. However, many statutory health insurance funds require a correctly issued private prescription in order to grant subsidies.

Yes, we offer osteopathy for children and infants: special, particularly gentle techniques adapted to the respective age group – from infants to adolescents.

Osteopathy is used in many medical fields. In some cases, osteopathy can be the sole and primary medical treatment. Depending on the specific symptoms, it can also be used as a complementary, interdisciplinary approach alongside other medical treatments. The latter is particularly beneficial in cases of serious pathologies, i.e., severe illnesses.

Osteopathy is not suitable for: life-threatening emergencies, acute infections, malignant tumors or serious neurological diseases and mental disorders.

If desired, our practice will work together with your medical team or integrate our own network of dentists, ENT specialists, orthopedists and neurologists from Düsseldorf and the surrounding area into your treatment – for a holistic and optimal treatment.
